EPA’s SmartWay® is an innovative, voluntary, public-private market-driven partnership that helps companies advance supply chain sustainability by measuring, benchmarking, and improving freight transportation efficiency. It helps shippers, carriers and logistics companies reduce fuel use, lower air emissions, and save money. Approximately 3,700 companies participate in SmartWay, including retailers, manufacturers, distributors, cargo owners and other freight shippers, as well as for-hire and private fleets, commercial truck and rail carriers, freight brokers, third party logistics providers, and other organizations.

SmartWay Partners use a set of EPA-tested performance tools and receive technical assistance to annually measure, assess and benchmark the performance of their freight operations, both internally within their organizations and against their peers. SmartWay provides a platform where companies across the supply chain exchange information on performance data and trends that are shaping the future of how goods are moved and the transportation industry. SmartWay Partners share a vision to move materials, supplies and goods in ways that protect the environment, enhance our nation’s energy security and foster economic vitality.
